If you've never had a telehealth appointment before, it's natural to wonder what the experience will be like. Will it feel impersonal? Can a provider really understand your health concerns through a screen? How do you prepare?
As a Family Nurse Practitioner who provides telehealth care exclusively, I've guided thousands of patients through their first virtual visits. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Telehealth?
Telehealth (also called telemedicine) is healthcare delivered through secure video, phone, or messaging technology. During a telehealth visit, you meet with a licensed healthcare provider from the comfort of your own home — no waiting rooms, no travel time, no exposure to illness.
In California, telehealth is recognized as a legitimate, effective way to receive medical care for many conditions. Your telehealth provider has the same training, licensing, and standards of care as any in-person provider.
What Conditions Can Be Treated Via Telehealth?
Telehealth works well for a wide range of health concerns:
- Acute illnesses: Cold, flu, sinus infections, UTIs, skin rashes, minor infections
- Chronic condition management: High blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, asthma
- Preventive care: Wellness visits, medication management, health coaching
- Specialized services: Medical weight management, peptide therapy, hormone optimization
- Follow-up visits: Lab review, medication adjustments, care planning
⚠️ Telehealth is NOT appropriate for medical emergencies — chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, suspected stroke, or serious injuries. For emergencies, always call 911.
How to Prepare for Your First Telehealth Visit
1. Test Your Technology Ahead of Time
- Ensure your device has a working camera and microphone
- Test your internet connection — a stable connection prevents disruptions
- Download any required apps or software beforehand
- Have a backup plan (phone number to call) in case of technical issues
2. Find a Private, Quiet Location
- Choose a room where you can speak freely without being overheard
- Minimize background noise — turn off the TV, silence notifications
- Ensure good lighting so your provider can see you clearly
3. Gather Your Medical Information
- List of current medications including dosages
- Known allergies or adverse medication reactions
- Recent lab results or imaging reports if applicable
- Names and contact info for other providers
4. Prepare Your Questions
- Write down your symptoms, when they started, and what makes them better or worse
- Note any questions you want to ask
- Be ready to describe your health goals for the visit
What Happens During the Visit
Check-In (5–10 minutes before)
You'll receive a link to join your appointment. Click the link a few minutes early to ensure your technology is working. You may fill out intake forms or consent documents electronically.
Introduction and Identity Verification
Your provider will greet you and verify your identity and location. California telehealth law requires confirming you're physically in California during the visit.
Medical History Review
Your provider will ask about your current symptoms, past medical history, medications, allergies, family history, and lifestyle factors. At WholeCare Health, visits are designed to give you time to be heard — not rushed.
Virtual Physical Assessment
While we can't perform hands-on exams, your provider can observe skin color and texture, respiratory effort, general appearance, and mobility through video. We may ask you to show specific areas of concern.
Treatment Plan and Education
Your provider will explain treatment options, prescribe medications if needed, order labs or imaging if necessary, and provide clear instructions for follow-up. You'll have time to ask questions.
Prescriptions and Follow-Up
If medication is appropriate, prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy. For weight management or peptide therapy, medication may be shipped directly to your home.
